Skin Tag Removal and Surgery

What is a Skin Tag?

Picture of Skin Tag

A skin tag, also known as an acrochordon or soft fibroma, is a small, soft, flesh-colored growth that hangs off the skin. They're completely painless and harmless. These little bumps are incredibly common, especially in adults over 50.

Do you have small, soft growths hanging from your skin? These are likely skin tags (also called skin tabs or cutaneous papillomas). While harmless, they can be removed if they bother you. Our surgeons, experienced in plastic and minor surgeries, ensure patient satisfaction and deliver excellent results.

Why Remove Skin Tags?

Even though skin tags aren't dangerous, many people choose to remove them for cosmetic reasons or if they cause irritation. At TMSC, removing skin tags (including fibroepithelial polyps) is a quick and painless process. You can go back to your regular activities right after the procedure.

Symptoms of Skin Tags

  • Appearance: Hangs off the skin by a small stalk (peduncle), are soft to the touch and can be smooth and round or wrinkly and asymmetrical.
  • Size: Most are less than 2 millimeters but can grow to several centimeters.
  • Color: Generally flesh-colored but can be darker. They can turn black if twisted, restricting blood flow.
  • Location: Common in areas where skin folds, like armpits, groin, thighs, eyelids and neck.
  • Additional Symptoms: They don't cause pain or discomfort unless irritated.

What Causes Skin Tags?

The exact cause of skin tags (also known as skin polyps or cutaneous tags) isn't clear. They're made of collagen and blood vessels covered by skin. Friction, HPV, obesity, pregnancy and insulin resistance can play a role in their formation. Skin tags are more common in people who are overweight, have diabetes or are older. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also lead to skin tags.

Skin Tag Removal in Toronto and Oakville

Removing skin tags at TMSC is simple and common. We use local anesthetic to numb the area, making the process painless after the initial injection. Most skin tags (or skin flaps) are removed without needing stitches and you can go back to your normal activities right away.

After the procedure, a tiny scab may form but will gradually fall off, leaving a pink mark that eventually fades to a barely visible white mark. This even applies to larger skin tags because of their narrow base.

Our highly trained and experienced surgeons ensure that all procedures are carried out with the utmost care, precision and regard for aesthetics in a safe environment. During your initial consultation, our surgeon will explain the entire process and answer your questions.

What to Expect During Skin Tag Removal Surgery

Skin tag removal is quick and painless, often taking around 30 minutes. Smaller skin tags might not even require local anesthesia. For larger or multiple skin tags, local anesthesia ensures your comfort. Our surgeon will explain the method they'll use to remove your skin tags (cutaneous tags).

If the skin tag is small, it might not leave a noticeable scar. Larger skin tags might cause minimal scarring, but our surgeon will ensure it is kept to a minimum and teach you aftercare procedures to help the scar fade over time. Typically, patients can resume normal activities immediately, but it’s advisable to wait about a week for proper healing and to keep the wound clean.

How Long Does Skin Tag Removal Last?

Once a skin tag (soft fibroma) is completely removed, the chances of it returning in the same spot are minimal, although new skin tags might develop elsewhere on the body.

FAQs

When Do Skin Tags Become a Problem?

Skin tags are usually harmless and painless. However, if they affect your confidence, get irritated by clothing or jewelry, or cause any discomfort, you can have them removed. If a skin tag twists and loses its blood supply, it might fall off on its own.

How to Remove Skin Tags?

Never attempt to remove skin tags at home. Consult one of our board-certified surgeons for professional advice and treatment. Methods like burning or freezing, similar to wart removal, can cause skin discoloration and irritation. Surgical removal is recommended for permanent results.

How Long Does Skin Tag Surgery Take?

The procedure typically takes no more than 30 minutes. The scar, if any, is usually minimal and our surgeons provide aftercare instructions to make it even less noticeable.

What Happens if I Accidentally Pull Off a Skin Tag?

Do not try to remove a skin tag yourself. Doing so can leave behind pieces of the tag, causing infection, scarring and potential recurrence.

Do Skin Tags Grow Back?

Skin tags (cutaneous papillomas) usually do not recur once permanently removed. However, new ones can develop in other areas of the body.

Does it Hurt to Get Skin Tags Removed?

Our surgeons use local anesthesia to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible. You might feel a small pinch from the needle, but the rest of the procedure is painless.

Should you Remove Skin Tags at Home?

While it may be tempting to use a skin tag removal kit or patches at home, it's not recommended due to the risk of infection, scarring and incomplete removal. Professional removal by our board-certified surgeons ensures safety and effectiveness.

How to Remove Skin Tags in One Night?

Trying to remove skin tags in one night at home isn't advisable. Quick fixes like using skin tag removal cream or kits can lead to complications like infection and scarring. The best way to remove a skin tag is through a professional procedure at TMSC, where our surgeons ensure a safe and effective removal process.
